Telecom 2025 marked another significant milestone in celebrating World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on May 15th. The sixth edition of this flagship event was hosted by the IEEE ComSoc Ecuador Chapter, in collaboration with the IEEE ComSoc Student Chapter of Universidad de las Américas, and took place at UDLAPARK in Quito.
This year’s agenda brought together over 130 participants from academia, industry, and student communities to discuss the present and future of telecommunications, with a special focus on Innovating to Connect: 6G, AI, and Cloud as Drivers of the Digital Future.
The conference opened with a distinguished keynote by Dr. David López-Pérez, IEEE ComSoc Distinguished Lecturer from the Universitat Politècnica de València, who addressed the topic: “What Will 6G Be? Fundamentals and the Impact of Upper Mid-Band Spectrum.” His session provided a forward-looking analysis of the 6G landscape and its fundamental enablers. Following this, Ing. Álvaro Benítez, Corporate B2B Consultant, presented on “Data Protection and Privacy Engineering in the Corporate Sector,” offering a practical perspective on cybersecurity in large organizations. Next, Ing. Viviana Estrella from Banco Pichincha discussed how “Cloud Paradigms and DevOps Philosophy Are Driving Digital Transformation in Companies.” The speaker lineup concluded with insights from Ing. Juan Obregón of Telefónica-Movistar and Ing. Richard Osorio from Corporación Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT), who explored various facets of telecom infrastructure and national strategies.
In parallel sessions, five peer-reviewed papers were presented, addressing topics such as wireless network performance, data security in cloud computing, antenna design, and radio frequency propagation. These contributions, reviewed by an academic committee, will be published in the scientific journal Maskay and edited by the Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas – ESPE, reinforcing the academic impact and dissemination of research produced within the region. Ten standout university projects demonstrated the ingenuity and real-world impact of student innovation. These initiatives addressed diverse areas such as wireless health monitoring, digital accessibility, immersive systems, and neurotechnology. Highlights included a mind-controlled prosthetic arm, an AI-powered rehabilitation platform, a sign-language-enabled digital TV receiver, and a wearable system for body data acquisition. These projects reflect a strong alignment with current technological trends and a commitment to addressing societal challenges through engineering.
The day concluded with a dynamic networking session, where participants could connect, exchange ideas, and explore collaborative opportunities across sectors. This space reaffirmed the role of community-building in fostering innovation and mutual growth.
We were pleased to welcome our valued sponsors, Complementos Electrónicos, Foderj Estratégico, HST, and Ciemtelcom, whose support was vital to the event’s success.
Telecom continues to be a beacon for forward-thinking discussions and interdisciplinary collaboration. As we reflect on Telecom 2025’s success, we look forward to advancing the frontiers of telecommunications through inclusive dialogue, pioneering research, and joint initiatives that shape the digital future.
