Teleweek 2026, Quito, Ecuador: Signals, Spectrum, and Wireless Technologies

By Juan Andrés Chanatásig - IEEE ComSoc Student Branch of Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, Chair, Quito, Ecuador

The fourth edition of Teleweek 2026 was held on April 23rd at Universidad Politécnica Salesiana (UPS) in Quito, Ecuador. The event was organized by the IEEE ComSoc Student Branch Chapter at UPS and IEEE ComSoc Ecuador, bringing together academia and students for a dynamic, hands-on experience focused on exploring and analyzing the radioelectric spectrum using modern tools such as Software-Defined Radio (SDR).

The goal of Teleweek was to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world applications through interactive and experimental sessions. Around 25 participants from several universities—including Universidad Central del Ecuador, Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas – ESPE, Escuela Politécnica Nacional, Universidad San Francisco de Quito, and Universidad Politécnica Salesiana—took part in technical activities covering radio-frequency fundamentals, signal propagation, and spectrum analysis.

A highlight of the day was the keynote talk by Senior IEEE Member Eng. Marcelo Cárdenas, entitled “NextGeneration Communications Analysis for Radio Frequency Testing.” His presentation explored advanced communication concepts and included a live demonstration of RF testing, giving attendees a practical look at realworld engineering.

After the keynote, participants joined a handson workshop called “From Air to Map: Exploration and Analysis of the Radioelectric Spectrum with SDR.” During this session, attendees used SDR devices and analysis software to capture signals, measure their strength at different locations across the campus, and record georeferenced data to create a visual map of radio signal behavior.

A networking break allowed everyone to share ideas, explore possible collaborations, and talk directly with the speaker and organizers.

Beyond the technical side, Teleweek 2026 also played a key role in motivating new students to get involved with IEEEComSoc and encouraging collaboration among student branches. The event once again proved its value as a platform for strengthening applied learning in telecommunications, promoting emerging technologies, and inspiring the next generation of engineers.
