The IEEE Communication Society Kerala Chapter and IEEE Sensors Council Kerala Chapter, in collaboration with the Innovation Center for IoT & Wireless Communication at Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering, Trivandrum, conducted two Summer Internship programs for B. Tech students in the domain of Internet of Things (IoT) and Software Defined Radio (SDR) from 9th to 27th June 2025. This hands-on program was designed to enhance technical skills and promote innovative project development among undergraduate engineering students. The program received an excellent response, with active participation from 60 students across multiple engineering institutions in Kerala.
Designed as an intensive hands-on training, the internship covered IoT architecture, development boards (Arduino, NodeMCU, ESP32, Raspberry Pi), sensor interfacing, and wireless technologies such as LoRa and Bluetooth. Participants also explored cloud integration using MQTT, ThingSpeak, and Blynk, and developed applications including agriculture and air-quality monitoring systems. A key highlight was the SDR module, where students worked with RTL-SDR and HackRF One to perform signal visualization, FM reception, and GNU Radio-based experiments, and to introduce cognitive radio concepts.
Sessions were led by Dr. Lakshmi V S, Faculty in charge of the Innovation Center for IoT & Wireless Communication, and a guest lecture by Mr. Anish Sathyan, Joint Director/Scientist E, CDAC Trivandrum, who delivered a session on IoT: Industrial Perspective. Mr. A B Shravan Krishna, Project Engineer, Edutecnicia, provided hands-on guidance on a Raspberry Pi-based application.
The program concluded with a project competition, evaluated by Mr. Govind S Nath, Embedded Software Engineer at Trizlabz. Pre and post-assessments showed significant improvement in students’ technical skills. Feedback highlighted the program’s strong hands-on approach, industry relevance, and impact on problem-solving and teamwork abilities.
The IEEE ComSoc Kerala Chapter team, Mr. Ruben Abraham Shibu and Mr. Rohith Manikandan, visited the IEEE Sri Lanka ComSoc Chapter from 17th to 18th July 2025 for dynamic cross-border outreach as part of the IEEE Communications Society Sister Chapter Program 2025. Mr. Ruben Abraham Shibu delivered a session on Cyber Security: Student to Professional Research, and Mr. Rohith Manikandan handled a session on Agentic AI in Electronics at Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology and NSBM Green University. The two-day engagement included interactive sessions, chapter activity exchanges, and collaborative discussions with professionals and student members in Sri Lanka. The program aimed to strengthen inter-chapter ties, promote knowledge sharing, and explore future joint ventures in communication technology domains. This visit marked a significant step toward enhancing international collaboration and exemplified IEEE ComSoc’s global mission to connect technology communities across borders.
As part of the IEEE ComSoc Sister Chapter Program, the IEEE Student Branch of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, in collaboration with the IEEE ComSoc Kerala Chapter and IEEE ComSoc Sri Lanka Chapter, organized an online expert talk on OpenRAN Security Issues and Trends for DLA on 3rd July 2025 and a guest talk on the topic Advancing In-Band Full-Duplex for 6G: Overview, Systems, and Research Outlook in online mode on 18th August 2025. The speaker in the expert talk was Dr. Pasika Ranaweera, Assistant Professor at the UCD School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Ireland, and Lead Researcher for the EU CONFIDENTIAL 6G Project. This insightful session delved into the critical security concerns of OpenRAN and explored the future potential of Distributed Learning Architectures (DLA) in next-gen wireless systems. The guest talk, delivered by Dr. Himal Suraweera from the University of Peradeniya, was an insightful session on advancements in 6G.
The IEEE ComSoc Kerala and Sri Lanka Chapters have been jointly recognized with the second prize in the IEEE ComSoc Outstanding Sister Chapters Award for their outstanding performance over the past year.
