Collaboration between the IEEE ComSoc Kolkata Sister Chapter and the IEEE Australia Section: Advancement in Smart City/Smart Intelligent Park Research

By Pallab Ganguly - IEEE ComSoc Kolkata Chapter Chair, India

The IEEE Communications Society (ComSoc) Kolkata Chapter team visited the University of Canberra, Australia campus on October 23, 2025, and collaborated with the University of Canberra and Engineers, Australia along with their sister chapter, IEEE Australia ComSoc to advance in Smart City /Smart Intelligent Park research program.

The visit included tours of the University of Canberra alongside a presentation from Engineers Australia and the IEEE ComSoc Kolkata chapter on recent advancements in Smart Grid and Smart City research. Pallab Ganguly, Kolkata Chapter Chair, and Ambarish Natu summarized the technical insights, proposed action points, and strategic roadmap for future IEEE ComSoc Kolkata and Australia Section Sister chapters collaborations in Cybersecurity and Smart City/Smart Grid simulation program. Using cutting-edge cybersecurity and communication systems, Smart City and Smart Grid technologies are essential for tackling urbanization and energy issues.

The ComSoc Kolkata Chapter delegation visited the Australia National University (ANU) to foster collaboration in these domains. Led by the chair Pallab Ganguly, the delegation explored ANU’s state-of-the-art facilities. Frank Jiraui Wang, Ph.D. Scholar from ANU, facilitated the visit. This article outlines the presentations, technical discussions, and proposed initiatives to drive joint research.

IEEE ComSoc Kolkata shared a presentation on the Smart City standardization framework and a Smart Intelligent Park simulation, aligning with IEEE P2784 objectives. Both parties emphasized the bridging of research and practical applications.

The proposed action points have been: Sister Chapter Collaboration Charter; Smart Intelligent Park, Pilot in Kolkata/Australia by 2026–2026 with University of Canberra, Engineers, Australia, and ANUs support; Future Programs, planning of workshops and exchanges.

Goals of the cooperation are: facilitate joint technical workshops, seminars, and webinars; enable student and researcher exchange programs between IEEE and Australian Universities in Canberra; support joint research proposals and funding applications in relevant domains; promote standards development and policy dialogue on emerging technologies; enhance industry-academia engagement for real-world impact.

To conclude, joint research on Smart Cities and Smart Grids advanced as a result of the IEEE ComSoc, Kolkata Chapter’s visit to Australia. The partnership created a roadmap for cybersecurity and Smart Grid/Smart City research innovation by utilizing Australian Universities’ resources, Canberra and ComSoc, Kolkata’s expertise. In line with IEEE’s aim to advance technology for the benefit of humanity, the proposed charter and pilot projects promise significant.

The collaboration charter sets forth the framework for collaboration between the IEEE ComSoc Kolkata Chapter and the IEEE ComSoc Australian Capital Territory Chapter, to jointly promote research, development, and knowledge exchange in the fields of Smart Grids and Advanced Power Systems; Smart Cities and Urban Innovation; Intelligent Systems and Edge AI; Terahertz communications; Ultra-reliable and low-latency communications; Cyber-physical security; Molecular communications.
