Teleweek 2025, Quito, Ecuador

By Leonidas Yépez - Chair of the IEEE ComSoc Student Branch of Escuela Politécnica Nacional, Ecuador

The third edition of Teleweek 2025 was held on April 24th at Escuela Politécnica Nacional (EPN) in Quito, Ecuador. The IEEE ComSoc Ecuador Chapter, the IEEE ComSoc Student Branch Chapter at EPN, and the IEEE AP-S, MTT-S, and RFID Joint Chapter jointly organized this event. The event brought together academia, students, and professionals for a dynamic and practice-oriented experience focused on wireless systems and radiocommunication technologies.

Teleweek aimed to bridge theoretical foundations with real-world applications through interactive and educational sessions. More than 25 participants from leading institutions, including Escuela Politécnica Nacional, Universidad de las Fuerzas Armadas — ESPE, Universidad de las Américas (UDLA), and Universidad Politécnica Salesiana (UPS), took part in technical activities that combined foundational knowledge with emerging trends.

Key topics, including radio frequency (RF), wave propagation, antenna behavior, and transmitter localization, were explored through hands-on learning. A highlight of the day was the keynote talk presented by Dr. Román Lara, Chair of IEEE ComSoc Ecuador, entitled “Smart Radiocommunications: From Link Budget to Channel Modeling with Machine Learning.” His presentation focused on the evolution of channel modeling methodologies, highlighting how machine learning can improve the accuracy and adaptability of wireless communication systems.

Following the keynote, participants engaged in a practical workshop on assembling FM transmitters and receivers, gaining first-hand experience with signal generation and processing. The event concluded with a Fox Hunting activity—an applied radio-tracking challenge that tested participants’ abilities to locate transmitters using RF equipment and real-time signal analysis.

A closing networking session enabled attendees to exchange insights, explore potential collaboration opportunities, and reflect on the increasing role of experimentation in engineering education.

Beyond its technical contributions, Teleweek 2025 also played a strategic role in member retention by fostering a sense of community and purpose among students and young professionals. The initiative reaffirmed its value as a platform for innovation, capacity building, and sustained engagement in the telecommunications field.
